We were quite perturbed about the Media attention about Joost van der Westhuizen and the polygraph test which he allegedly undertook, and of more importance which was ostensibly manipulated to Joost’s advantage. In this regard we are of the view that the public should be informed that the event with Joost and the polygraph test does not have the support of SAPPA or its members and that such conduct is in conflict with the ethical and professional conduct maintained by SAPPA and its members. SAPPA members are also affiliated with the American Polygraph Association (APA) which sets international standards for work ethics, professional behavior and the protection of human rights. The full letter we sent to Beeld follows below:
"I am contacting you in my capacity as President of the South African Professional Polygraph Association (SAPPA) regarding the Media attention about Joost van der Westhuizen and the polygraph test which he allegedly undertook, and of more importance which was ostensibly manipulated to Joost’s advantage. Presently, two Polygraph Associations exist , namely SAPPA (South African Professional Polygraph Association) and PASA (Polygraph Association of South Africa ). SAPPA is also affiliated with the (APA) American Polygraph Association. These two Associations share the same beliefs in maintaining high ethical and professional standards and the protection of human rights and also strive for the same goals pertaining to the polygraph industry. The majority of accredited polygraphists in South Africa belong to either of these Associations. These two Associations are in the process of merging in order to combine efforts to maintain the standards as abovementioned through its members. We request the public that when in search of a polygraph examiner that they ensure that the polygraphist is a member of either SAPPA or PASA. In this way the public can ensure to a greater extent that the polygraphist that they will be dealing with will adhere and maintain the aforementioned standards. We further request that you make available to us the details of the particular polygraphist to ascertain whether, that person is a member of SAPPA – if so – a formal enquiry would be registered with both the Associations for investigation. We trust that we can depend on your co-operation to the benefit of the public and the business sector. For a list of SAPPA members the public can visit our website at www.polygraph.org.za. We can also be contacted at (012) 349-2952. Kind Regards Amelia Griesel South Africa Professional Polygraph Association (SAPPA) 0861274911 0827863347" |
